Donate Food to Community Fridges

Community fridges ensure that no one goes hungry…

Community fridges are large refrigerators set up in areas with lot of footfalls. They are usually located outside temples or commercial campuses or residential complexes. The fridges not only serve underprivileged poor people but also others who work outdoors like auto-rickshaw drivers, milkmen, vegetable vendors, building watchmen, courier boys etc.

Some restaurants in cities of India have come forward to install community fridges outside their establishments. Not only do they load leftover excess food that is untouched, but they even add food freshly prepared for the fridge.

How do community fridges function?

Most of the fridges allow only vegetarian food to be placed. While the organisers ensure that the fridge functions normally on a continuous basis, donors take care to load food that is fresh and safe to consume. Popular items donated are fruit, milk, water, roti-sabzi, rice, dal, fried rice, poha, samosas, and so on.

The refrigerator also provides a platform for people to donate food on special occasions like birthdays, wedding anniversaries and so on.

I am a regular donor of food to this fridge. Happy to note Mr Coutinho's appreciation.

Intrigued by this concept, I visited the community kitchen located adjecent to a temple in Versova. I was heartened to see needy locals helping themselves with food stored.

Hi Nagesh, as far as we know, there is no community fridge functioning in Pune. Why don't you take the initiative?

R P Nagesh, Pune    indiarefers.com@gmail.com

I would like to donate food to any community fridge, if one is located in Baner area of Pune.
